Chinese Herbal Medicine is another very important treatment modality that is widely used in Oriental Medicine. Chinese Herbs is a powerful method of healing. It can be used both for the treatment of illness and optimizing health and to prevent disease. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems. I use Chinese Herbal medicine in various forms in the clinic, if indicated for the patient and condition treated.

Chinese Medicine includes plant, animal, and mineral substances. The materia medica (book on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) medicinal substances) includes information on the traditional uses, dosages, and contra-indications for each substance, as well as any available information on drug interactions, and any conventional medical research that has been published.

A typical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescription consists of a complex variety of many different herbal and mineral ingredients. Chinese Herbal Medicines are intended to assist the body’s own restorative function, by treating the underlying TCM pattern that forms the foundation of the disease. Herbal formulas are prescribed in different forms, ranging from tea, to pills, capsules and granular form, which are chosen according to the patient’s needs.

Unlike conventional medicine which attempts to isolate and separate a disease from a person, Chinese Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the whole person. It can rid the body of disease, but can also be nourishing and balancing to the body in very specific ways. It improves organ function and builds up a person’s constitution and immune system.

One of the great advantages of Chinese medicine is the absence of serious side effects. On the rare occasion where there may be some mild digestive upset or difficulty with the taste of the herbs we advise patients to take their herbs after meals, at a reduced dosage, or modifying the herbal combination. Herbs are available in pill formats for those who have difficulty with the taste of herbal tea. Most conditions do very well with the use of regular herbal prescriptions, and taking them regularly is important for speedier recovery.

I only use Chinese Herbal Medicine that is of the highest quality and standard in my clinic. These herbs are tested in the laboratory to ensure compliance with proper species identification, active compounds and heavy metal and pesticides standards.
