Scalp acupuncture is a contemporary acupuncture technique integrating traditional Chinese needling methods with Western medical knowledge of representative areas of the cerebral cortex. It is done to stimulate the brain neurons of the underlying area, in order to facilitate a return of function in that area.

If part of the brain is damaged, for instance by a stroke, then the scalp is stimulated over the damaged area of the brain. All the scalp points are representations of the underlying functional areas of the brain.

It has been proven to be a most effective technique for treating some of the symptoms of acute and chronic central nervous system disorders like Parkinson’s disease and cerebral palsy. It is used in rehabilitation of paralysis and other symptoms due to stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury.

I use sterile, stainless steel, single-use acupuncture needles. These are painlessly inserted into loose areolar tissue layers of the scalp. It is very safe with a limited risk of infection, as I follow antiseptic protocols. There is no risk of heavy bleeding, although the scalp is highly vascularized.
