Electroacupuncture is a form of acupuncture where a very mild microcurrent is passed between pairs of acupuncture needles. This practice augments the use of regular acupuncture, can restore health and well-being and is particularly good for treating pain.

Like with traditional acupuncture, the needles are inserted into specific points on the body. Electrodes are then attached to pairs of needles to generate continuous stimulation. The E-stim (electrical stimulation) machine is then adjusted for the frequency and intensity of the impulse being delivered, depending on the condition being treated. It may feel uncomfortable or strange, especially the first time when you don’t know what to expect, but it should not hurt.

It is very effective and well known for treating acute or chronic pain. It helps prevent muscle atrophy and build strength in patients with injuries. It is also helpful in keeping muscles active, especially after any type of spinal cord injury or strokes. The healing effects extend beyond that and it can also be used for addictions, psycho-emotional disorders, nausea, weight management, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, facial spasms or aphasia.

FDA-approved E-stim machines are safe when used as directed by a registered acupuncture physician. It is not recommended in patients with pace-makers, a history of heart disease, seizures or during pregnancy.
