February is American Heart Month

24 February 2021

Did you know that about 655,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year? This number could be dramatically reduced if people are informed about what could be done to prevent the development of heart disease.

At Acupuncture & Homeopathy Clinic we treat the individual by using a very detailed health history and physical exam; and we look towards western and oriental medicine, to formulate a health program specifically for you.

The modalities used can vary from acupuncture, homeopathic remedies, western supplements to Chinese herbs and more.

I think it is very fitting that we celebrate Valentine’s Day in February, during American Heart month. On this day we focus on the love we feel for the special people in our lives. From a western and oriental medicine perspective, we view the heart as where love resides. We call someone “warm hearted, kind hearted, open hearted”, when we refer to their loving nature.

In Five Element acupuncture, the Heart meridian is more than a pathway of energy that allows the heart to beat regularly in our chest; it is also how the heart’s vital energy functions within us on a deeper level. If the heart meridian is in balance, it gives us the power to feel warmth, joy and happiness. The Heart meridian gives us our capacity for compassion and understanding, and allows our minds and bodies to rest during sleep. During stressful situations it gives us inner calm, order and control. It gives us the courage to carry on, even when life gets us down.

When the Heart meridian is out of balance, it could lead to a lack of joy, unhappiness, and difficulty falling asleep. We could lose control of ourselves during stressful periods which could leave us overwhelmed, anxious and eventually leading to depression.

A balanced diet and regular exercise are very important for our heart health. It is just as important for our heart health to develop loving relationships, to encourage each other through compassion and understanding and to cultivate our capacity for unconditional love.
